Courting Tradition

The Traditional Courts Bill is highly contested legislation that is seen as being unconstitutional, undemocratic and may be negative for vulnerable rural women. Courting Tradition engages critically with this bill by presenting diverse voices on the tabled law as well as what should be done to challenge its retrogressive powers over rural society. A contrasting history of the traditional and magistrates courts is presented to outline the future challenges to ensure effective justice beyond party alliances.

The Eastern Cape has some of the deadliest roads in South Africa. More people die on the road from Mthatha and East London annually than any other road in South Africa and yet surprisingly the Eastern Cape statistics show that is has the 6th lowest rating of policing on the roads. We set off to investigate what solutions the government is implementing and what impact these roads have on people that use them like farmers and paramedics

On the Move – the horrors of hitch-hiking

This investigative story explores the tragic murder of Lelona Fufu, a Rhodes graduate who was killed in Port Elizabeth when hiking to her graduation ceremony in Grahamstown. The piece thus looks into the culture of hitch-hiking and the different issues involving it in the Eastern Cape. The story comprises of four components, the Fufu hike gone wrong, public opinion about hitch-hiking, a case study about a grade 8 pupil who hitch-hikes home after school and experts also give more insight into the issue.

Commercial shark fishing is one of the least publicized industries in South Africa. Experts, restaurant owners and retailers say that shark meat is a viable food source but regulations and policy is in disarray;. This documentary shows that this industry exists and has to be regulated to be susatainable. We travel along the Eastern Cape coastline to a St Francis Bay factory that processes shark and sells it. We meet shark conservationists to hear what the industry could do for tourism and environmental impact and a restaurant owner who serves shark on his menu.

Umthati organic gardens

The Umthathi Training Project in Grahamstown teaches the importance of organic produce and helps communities to grow their own. The Seventh Day Adventist School in Joza takes up the challenge and manages their own vegetable garden in a small space with minimal resources. Koleka Ralo explains the benefits of their techniques. These techniques have been adopted by Seventh Day Adventist School in Joza.

Kariega rhino poaching 2012

Thandi and Themba are two rhinos that survived the Kariega game reserve poaching incident on the 3rd of March 2012. This video looks at how they are both coping a week after the attack when they both received extensive treatment to aid their survival.
South Africa is in the middle of a rhino poaching crisis. The Kariega game reserve in the Eastern Cape had three rhinos attacked with two left in critical condition. We look at their condition a week from their attack with veterinarian, Dr. William Fowlds.

Fire at PJ Olivier


A veld fire became threatening when it reached the borders of PJ Olivier High School, Grahamstown a new wing of the school caught fire. The damage to a biology lab, computer centres and classroom will set the school back at least one million rand.

Rhodes Green Fun Run 2012 – Worm Farm

The Green Fund Run is an annual race to fund sustainable projects in Grahamstown. The event supported the Rhodes University Worm Farm Project started by a student at Rhodes. This sustainable project uses biodegradable waste to produce fertilizer which can then be sold.

An after –funeral drinking spree ended in tragedy. Twelve young people journeyed from Dimbaza to Fort Hare in the Eastern Cape after a funeral. Close to their destination their car crashed over a bridge killing half the group and leaving six survivors . Mawethu Maweza, the only sober person to have survived that night, tells the story of the fatal crash and the traditional isiXhosa ceremony to pay respects to his ancestors for protecting him that tragic night.
